Closed For Renovation

Every now and then, shops and business places, homes and hotels close down to get redone. This happens as a necessity. The décor becomes too boring, new ownership, change of identity and entity, or just because.
Usually, when we see this sign hanging somewhere, it usually brings a sense of expectation and excitement. Something new is about to be unveiled. What will the new colors be? How will the décor look like? How about the menu? Are they gonna loose that sour waitress? Questions questions questions!
It’s usually time for change, because old won’t cut it, we have to close for renovation.
Our lives do need renovation as well, especially where relationships are concerned.
When was the last time you had a relationship overhaul? Or are you too needy to even dare institute change in the fear that you will loose?
A couple of thoughts on renovation
  1. The people on the outside do not see what’s going on: Even the closest ones to you do not have to always know and approve what changes you are going through. There is a time to involve them with the details of your life, and there is time to tell them, “I love you but ‘xcuse me, I’m going through something, and I don’t need you right now” Nipe space, tutaongea November!
  2. Renovations Can be Messy: Restructuring your personal life can be messy! You go through your phone book and chuck some people, Change your email address, move house, kick out a boyfriend that’s worthless, Kiss a nagging girlfriend goodbye, tell your boss he hurt you, or your mom that she handled you wrong. Truth is, every once in a while you must man up or ‘woman up’ as someone recently told me, and deal with relational clutter. There may be tears, raw emotion and even feelings of betrayal, but it’s gotta be done.
  3. Renovations are costly: Alas! You used to depend on some people for affirmation, identity, self-worth, esteem, love and affection, and suddenly you have to end the relationship and reliance on them. You must be ready to draw from yourself deeply and your relationship with God as you don’t turn to these people anymore. Truth is, a lot of times we get love and approval from all the wrong sources and it’s time to snip that umbilical cord!
  4. It has to happen after messy experiences: Floods, break-ins, fires, are some of the reasons you have to renovate. If you have been through a breakup, trauma, or a painful experience, it’s crucial you take time to get yourself together. Close down to get remade over. Remember, you need to heal, especially after a messy affair in your life! Plus you don’t have to have a ‘boyfriend’ or ‘girlfriend’ all the time! Kwani?
  5. Murphy’s Law is always close by: You may take time to get relationships restructured thinking it may be two months and end up with six months in your hands! Don’t worry, sometimes in life, you can’t change how people respond to you, and not all goes well as you bring order in your life Thing is, it’s a Necessary evil till it’s done!
  6. New and temporary Staff will be hired: during these periods of your life, there will be people that you will come into your life just to help you renovate and renew yourself. Ni mabeshte wa kupitia tu! Don’t be surprised if these relationships last a couple of months or are just a onetime thing and then you have to move on. It could be a new church, a colleague, a neighbor, or just a friend that really speaks into your life as you get sorted out. Just don’t get too attached.
  7. A lot of Junk is Exposed!: It’s amazing how many wrong things get exposed during a renovation. Don’t be shocked to find mistakes in the way people related with you or even faults in your own character! It’s time for you to take a deep look at yourself and take a relational and character bath. Check yourself out thoroughly and be ready for some shockers.
  8. You will be misunderstood: Una maringo! How could you not text me? Where did you go? What’s with the attitude? What did I do to you? Are all things you will hear from needy people that don’t understand you when you are closed. Get ready for them, and don’t be utterly rattled by these!
  9. The New look is always fresh, better and more inviting: How would you like for people to meet you after some time and say, ‘Man, it’s so refreshing to get together with you’? I’m sure priceless. Well, as you are in the throes of getting yourself reorganized, keep your eye on the prize. You will come out better and stronger than before!

Do you have too much unfinished business with people? Are there people you need to have a sit-down with? Are you finding yourself anxious because of unresolved issues in relationships? It may be time for you to be closed for renovation.  Take an inventory of where you are at in your relationships, and bring the changes necessary to you and them so you can be a bigger, better and sweeter you!

Have fun renovating YOU!
