Gone, Yet Speaking

I share a devotional i had about eighteen months ago when i lost a very dear friend of mine. His name was John, and His was a life worth imitating, and the challenges he left behind still speak to many that knew him.

Heb 11:4 by faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts. And by it he, being dead, yet speaks.

Thinking about John and hearing some of the great things that people who knew him had to say brought this scripture to my heart. The power and value that the things we do have and can continue to have even after we leave the scene is truly amazing.
One of the great things about John was that he did all things well. There was a certain inner drive that was quite and yet resolute, to do and accomplish all the tasks he undertook with excellence. It can be said that He lived well, but most importantly, He did all that was before Him well.
I must live my life with a determination to be excellent and a with a devotion to do things I’m supposed to well. What Abel did still speaks today. We still remember it and use it as a pointer to our faith and walk with God. What I do now for God and the kingdom, will it still keep speaking, ministering, challenging, building and drawing others to God when am gone?
Johns life is speaking, for the testimony of the people that worked and lived with Him bear witness to that fact. Abel’s life is still speaking, good things after he’s gone. Will I still be speaking after I’m gone? That’s the ultimate question I have to answer now. Now that I’m still around.
Prayer
Dear Lord, my heart has been overwhelmed with the loss of my friend, yet challenged at how his life is still speaking to many others after he’s gone, because he offered himself to you and others in an excellent way. Help me to bring up excellence in my life and to live knowing that what I do does not just count for now, but for all eternity, and most importantly, let me live so as to still be speaking great things after I’m gone that will point others to you. Amen.
